Bill retired the strip because he was out of fresh ideas . . .
I remember his reason for ending the strip was that everyone wanted him to “commercialize” it and that that was beneath him as an artist. Also, there was something about the size/format of the strip that the newspapers were forcing all the comics to adhere to and he didn’t want to conform (something like that).
flowergirl is correct. It was the great downsizing of the Sunday comix that was limiting his artistry. His final strip was a not subtle jab at the industry by drawing his final panel full size. What a loss. Just so they could cram more outdated Mark Trail and Mary Worth strips in to cater to the old folks that still buy the newspapers…. Ah, well- it just makes the existing body of work more valuable, I suppose. But, there still has never been a replacement strip anything like C&H. Watterson still rules!

She’ll just politely return it to Calvin, thus thwarting his plot and shaming him to boot!

He needs to do a follow up strip to C&H where they are grown and Susie is Cal’s wife.

Would be even better if Bill Watterson never ended Calvin and Hobbes in the first place and was still drawing it.
Yeah, that only happened about twenty years ago and I’m still upset about it! At least we can see it again on gocomics.
