It is a measure of how far collectivism permeates our culture that so many people believe that advocating independence and individualism requires you to live on a desert island or at least to make your own shoes.
Your statement shows you are another example of how deeply collectivism is embedded in peopleās minds and our culture. You can no longer think of humans as anything but a member of a species, a cell in an organism, a cog in a machine ā not as an individual but only as a member of a tribe or race or class or some other grouping that tries to obliterate the identity of individuals. Thatās the source of racism, extermination camps, and World Wars, just for starters.
As for the ācenturyā claim, perhaps that might be true for the use of the word āindividualismā, but the idea is written all over the Declaration of Independence and the Enlightenment, with roots going back to the eternal struggle between Plato and Aristotle.
Although Jkissās summary leaves out important issues, he/she is right, and I thank him/her.
