One animal name you’re not likely to learn how to say in high school French classes is seal. Seals and walruses were my sons’ favorite animals when they were little – we had stuffed animals, books, etc. When they were taking French in high school, it dawned on us that they didn’t know these names, and I had never learned them in school, either. So, we looked them up. When we learned that seal is phoque, we understood the omission. The next day, my smart-aleck son went to class and asked the teacher how to say seal. “All right, who told you?” she asked. The little fink blamed it on me. Then I was that mom.

Zombi is masculine, zombie is feminine. Remember the rule. Nouns in French that end in e are feminine. Those that don’t in e are masculine.
