I work in a public library. There is an entire genre of books for homeschooling parents, books whose “science” lessons come directly from the book of Genesis. Fortunately there are plenty of other books for homeschool parents who want to teach their kids about the world, rather than shield them from it.
In my early 20s, I swore if I ever had kids I’d homeschool them. High school is such a damaging social environment, and the longer I was out of school the more appalled I was about what I didn’t learn there. History, cultures (past and present), literature, and science especially. My parents had paid $20,000 to a supposedly great school, and I didn’t know squat.
Now, I’m in my late 30s, and I took the easy way out—I didn’t have kids at all. Too darn much work to get it right.
Oh, I remember this one. This one was fun…in a sad sort of way. It’s such a closed-minded bookshop, see. It’s probably the one bookstore I WOULDN’T want to step into.
Well, Discworld is a flat planet. And the people who thought that what looked liked the edge of the earth was just the horizon line set out to find out, but never came back because it was the edge of the world and they went over it.
