Jimbo: Ready, Pasquale?
Pasquale: Ready!
Jimbo: Nice job!
Pasquale: Thanks, Daddy!
Bird: Nice job? He missed every ball! What is this game?
Bird: It's called encouragement!
Bird: It's one of the more admirable human pastimes!
Your solution would be what? to verbally thrash Pascal because he missed the ball? This comic isn’t about a game. It’s about Jimbo encouraging Pascal to practice so he can improve his skills.
Jimbo has it right. Encouragement with instruction work better than the alternative. Encouragement makes a child want to learn and get it right. Discouragement makes them think what’s the point. I’m not one who thinks everyone should win and get a trophy, but kids should get the encouragement to help them try.
Last week I was watching the Littlest Leaguers at the park by my house having a little batting practice. One coach was pitching under handed and the other coach was catching the kid hitting wasn’t having much luck and was getting angrier with each pitch, finally he got a foul tip and the ball was laying on the plate the coach reached forward to get the ball and the batter, now pissed looking at the pitcher whipped the bat back around as hard as he could nailed the coach in the head knocking him out cold.Saw the coach this week saw and except for some stitches he was ok .I am still laughing about it now it looked like a Disney comedy when it happened.

At least encouragement exists in the comics, in real life, not so much, unfortunately :~(

As Cenk Uygur from TYT would say… You at a 10, bring it down to a 2.

The kid is practicing and learning the game and some idiots think he’s in the World Series or something. What is wrong with you people?

It can be a good job of trying, but studies have shown that vague encouragement is worse than none. Better to say “good job of going after the ball.”
