I’m curious; was Garcia, as a Spaniard, aware of the negative connotations in the USA of associating fried chicken to Woods? In other words, I’m asking if there was actual racial malice instead of run-of-the-mill taunting after their spat a few weeks before.

Many countries around the world have much less ethnic diversity than the US, and many of the people grow up using racial and ethnic slurs about other people and cultures without even thinking about it, because everyone around them does it. I have heard some of my coworkers in Ireland refer to a Tanzanian colleague as “Darky”, even when addressing him directly. However, the fried chicken idea is strictly an American stereotype about the stereotypical African-American diet. Sergio would not have grown up with that in Spain. He picked that up here and therefore must be fully aware of the negative connotations it carries, particularly since Fuzzy Zoeller was called out for it at the Masters several years ago. He meant it to be derogatory.

Why does anyone care about this? Let the kids work it out on their own playground.
