I had the same problem when I switched to teaching humans after a long time obedience training dogs. Had to learn to say, “Well done!” or “Good job!” not “Good lad!” The basic principles are still valid though—lots of praise when they get it right, and don’t give in when it’s a question of discipline; not rough, but firm.

“Fetch” is a common verb here in the Philippines (without recriminations) and it took me quite awhile to get used to it.

He said “please” – every time! We don’t do that with dogs.
But the look on his face as he says “Good girl!” — he knows, and just can’t resist. Been there, done that, too :(
