I had the same problem when I switched to teaching humans after a long time obedience training dogs. Had to learn to say, “Well done!” or “Good job!” not “Good lad!” The basic principles are still valid though—lots of praise when they get it right, and don’t give in when it’s a question of discipline; not rough, but firm.

“Fetch” is a common verb here in the Philippines (without recriminations) and it took me quite awhile to get used to it.

How many years have they been married, and this is just coming up? These are things you iron out in the first year or so.

Oh, he’s just begging to be slugged! :) Of course, she could turn the tables and lick his face in appreciation of the praise.

He said “please” – every time! We don’t do that with dogs.

But the look on his face as he says “Good girl!” — he knows, and just can’t resist. Been there, done that, too :(
