Chepe: Conservative senator Marco Rubio said he wants a stringent English-only rule... inserted into the recent immigration bill. Pepe: That guy has "immigrant granny" issues.
Try living in another country that doesn’t use English as its language and start demanding all the concessions we give foreign language speakers in this country. Let me know how that works out for you.
Well said rmacprivate. There is also the trouble when you allow multiple languages to be mandated in government, it’s called Balkanization of the country. Present day immigrants should take a clue from the immigrants of the late 1800s and early 1900s. They spoke their native languages and had their own newspapers in their own communities with no interference from the government. As their children learned the English language the need for these faded away, and the subsequent generations became more and more prosperous instead of remaining mired in poverty by refusing to join society.
The immigrant experience has been hugely successful for the US. Not knowing English has never be a requirement nor particularly an impediment. Xenophobia has, unfortunately, been a constant. Look back to what was being sad and written about earlier waves of immigrants; the Irish, the Italians. Immigration is and always has been a net gain for the nation.
If Rubio wants an English only rule, why did he give the answer to the president’s State of the Union Address in Spanish? And two, why doesn’t he change his name to Mark Blonde?
My great grand mother came to America “because the streets are paved with gold” she sank ankle deep in the mud when she stepped off the ship..She learned to speak English from sending her sons to school and having them teacher her, but she never spoke it well. To this day, Illinois has the DL test in Polish.
