Yep, most Sunday strips have a title panel and a second panel, both of which are omitted by many many newspapers..My major complaint about the practice is that Doonesbury has always been an eight-panel strip and almost every newspaper I have read omits the first two. Dith–picable!
Still, I don’t see a “tie-in” with the bird and the paint, since it doesn’t connect with the rest of the cartoon. If I were an editor, I’d throw out these first two panels, too! .On the other hand, “Doonesbury” always makes a connection with the main cartoon – in a manner that if the “throw-away” is omitted, it doesn’t detract from the message. But at the same time, there is a legitimate and logical connection. That is not the case here.
