Alice: Mom, have I been to the beach before? Mom: Yes. Last year. Remember? Mom: You made that big sand castle and played in the waves? And flew a kite shaped like a fish? And we played mini golf every night? Alice: Did the place where we stayed have a lamp with seashells in it? Mom: Um, yes, I think it did. Alice: That lamp was great! I LOVE the beach!

Alice’s memory is so typical of very young kids! Go, Alice! (Stay, Petey!)

Grew up in the Midwest. Never saw the ocean till I was a teenager. Actually, I like the beach and jumping in the waves. And yes, the bikinis do make for a nice change of scenery. Of course so do the dolphins playing off the shore. What I hate most is the sunscreen ritual before getting there. But Alice is right – the sea shell lamp makes everything better.

I wonder if they’ll leave the lamp on for you.

It’s funny what we do and don’t remember from our childhood. Is it random?

Our grandkids came down to St. Petersburg from Wisconsin for our fiftieth wedding anniversary. The almost-three-year-old, our “Alice,” went to the Gulf beaches off Pass-a-Grille and Fort Desoto, visited the Suncoast Bird Sanctuary, and stayed at a motel with a great pool. All she could remember, though, was the drink machine outside her room.

My daughter and I were talking about things we did when she was little. So funny the things they remember. You try to make a great experience for them and they remember the lamp.

That sounds like the way some of my tutoring students describe their vacation trips to me!

I can relate, thinking about some of the conversations I have with my kids.

I have 1000’s of shells and 5 shell lamps. Can never have enough. Keeps the beach close at hand!

You can make them, they sell glass lamps that are hollow and you fill ’em.

Alice and I would be kindred spirits. I never remember anything worthwhile from trips, just things like lamps and phones.
