Beni: What is it? Alice: It's a shopping mall. Alice: Here's the daddy store, and the mommy store, and all the little children stores, and here's the food court where they eat! Beni: I'll make a big box store for them to go shopping in. Alice: Good idea!

Beni and Alice, I think, sit on the board of directors of my local strip mall, in which I have a microscopic investment (I doubt if I “own” even one square inch). Except they are better planners!

You know your strip mall is going downhill when the main tenant is a 99 cent store or a second hand thrift store. When they ruined our town with them, I tried to make them include public bathrooms as a city rule. That did not happen. Even here in the high rent district, we have street people – they have nowhere to go, makes for a breakdown of society.

The shopping strip where I go to gym in St. Petersburg lost its T. J. Maxx, SweetBay grocery (a good one with nice produce), and smaller stores I can’t recall. All that’s left is the YouFit gym, a Dollar Tree store, a dry cleaner, and the Boley (for mentally ill) thrift store.

I remember being in a strip mall in New Orleans — strip clubs as far as the eye could see!
