    IMHO, Ellie didn’t have to be so loud about having her kids pick up their mess. She could have asked them to do so in a moderate voice and given them a little time to do what she asked. If she expects the kids to stay out of her hair, she has to assume they’ll have to play with something. Kids almost never play with one single item at a time.

    I think Ellie has to re-evaluate her priorities and time her daily chores to lighten her load and allow time to spend quality time with her kids. She is always short with them and never seems to enjoy their company.

    @Gokie5 (from yesterday):

    Thanks for the link on those ridiculous “DECORATOR” soaps!

    Maybe she means it’s a lot of work for her to rule the kids. No matter how you slice it, it doesn’t make much sense.

    I appreciate your explanation of “work to rule,” as I’d never heard it before.But I think she’s just tired of having to do everything.

    Yes, howthe, thanks for explaining that. You saved a lot of us from having to look that up.

    I’ve been wondering why Ellly didn’t deprive them of something earlier, rather than yelling all the time. Then I remembered that this is a comic strip, and dramatic punch lines are the norm.

    It would be even better if John was helping. The other thing Elly could do is stage a sit down strike. Saw that on the Waltons. Olivia put a chair in the middle of the floor and sat in it, and said she wasn’t doing anything until she got more help. It worked, she got a second honeymoon out of it.

    Susan, you and a few others need to keep in mind what Gokie said. You expect a comic strip character to behave like a normal human being and absolutely vilify her when she doesn’t. Gokie has rightly pointed out that the “norm” in a comic strip is just such overreactions and drama. Lighten up and enjoy the strip for what it is. Don’t try to make a comic strip character (by definition a caricature) into some kind of child abuser and shrew.

    Unlike Elly Patterson, Alice Mitchell has a supportive husband.
