    I know this is pointlessā€¦ but if I could just go back and start over, and anytime I even think about marriage, someone pops up with a ā€œTrain-Wreckā€ image to discourage frivolous ventures.

    non sequiter essentially means ā€˜it dosent make senseā€™. I think he should have used irony to convey the thought.

    Actually, non sequitur means ā€œit does not followā€, in other words the thought does not logically proceed from what has just been said. In this case, Caulfield just doesnā€™t realize that it follows perfectly.
