Hey, I got it instantly, and I’m 14 years younger than Clovia. I read that they did that gag over and over again, drawing out the pause longer and longer. Finally, they did one where the announcement was at the beginning of the show. Blanc did the “Anaheim, Azusa, and Cuc…” and then the whole rest of the episode played out before he did the “…amonga!” at the very end.
In the Benny show, it was a train announcement. I think Phil Harris had at least one episode where the announcement was used. It brought back some good memories.
They must be waiting in a Southwest terminal, but then what would they be doing there? Southwest doesn’t fly from Italy. Note the lady scratching her head. She hasn’t a clue either. :)
I called it a few days ago, after the Race Track Tout showed up! The train announcer bit was funny on several levels. People in the Los Angeles area knew that there were no trains that directly connected Anaheim, Azusa and (Rancho) Cucamonga, while people in the East would just wonder about those crazy California place names. There’s a statue of Jack Benny in Rancho Cucamonga as well as a street named for him (Jack Benny Drive). There is an intersection there of Jack Benny Drive with Rochester Avenue, although Rochester Avenue is not named for Eddie Anderson’s character.
It’s not just Jack Benny and the WB cartoons that are referenced in this “Anaheim, Azusa” comment. In 1964, Jan and Dean recorded a song called The Anaheim, Azusa And Cucamonga Sewing Circle, Book Review And Timing Association, which probably ties with Nino Tempo and April Stevens’ I’ve Been Carrying A Torch For You For So Long That I Burned A Great Big Hole In My Heart as one of the longest titles to be squeezed onto the label of a 45 RPM record!

I can actually hear Mel Blanc’s voice doing the announcing. Thank you, Mr. Scancarelli!

Speaking of axe-grinder and drawing a blank, I didn’t catch the pun(s?) in the last panel until the third reading.
danielse about 11 years ago
So you’re saying using “Blank” & “Blanc” isn’t a pun?? Well, if you say so. . . .
Also, while I’m here, animation and ‘drawing’ is pretty close for me, and probably others.
