Why do they call them lightning bugs? They don't shoot lightning for that matter, why do they call them fireflies? They don't shoot fire. I enjoy discussing such great questions of the universe. I'd say they fall into the category of light conversation.

Don’t know where you live, but here in Wisconsin, they come out toward the end of July through August.

My neighbor would catch them, pull off the “lightning” end and use them as earings.

I saw lighting bugs all summer but, by Labor Day it has gotten too cold for them. ( Detroit)
