Can we make Cubs jokes? Just kidding! I’m a fan too. Without googling, do you know who Kenny Hubbs was and Lou Brock’s feat as a Cub??

British historians call it “the second war of American independence”. The first one was largely a sideline as they were busy taking the riches of India. The second was largely a sideline because they were busy fighting Napoleon. After 1815, they no longer needed naval crews and decided they might as well leave the US that worthless land. Canada, on the other hand, got their independence gradually. Self rule in 1870, their own military in 1920, a flag and later their own constitution in the 1960s and ’70s. As a Canadian friend would say when we encountered culture shock there, “You have to realize we are more civilized here.” It was difficult to argue the point because in each instance, she was right.

ghostkeeper: I was trying off my poor memory, having never formally studied Canadian history. As for the military, of course Canada had long had one – in fact Canadian units fought on both sides on the Plains of Abraham – but they were militia units. The Anzacs (Australia and New Zealand) were an independent force in WW-I, but Canada was still under British command until just after. I was aware of the BNA Act, but unsure of the Charter date as it occurred after I moved back to the US. So little time to do proper research:-(

In the War of 1812, the United States took on the greatest naval power in the world, Great Britain, in a conflict that would have an immense impact on the young country’s future. Causes of the war included British attempts to restrict U.S. trade, the Royal Navy’s impressment of American seamen and America’s desire to expand its territory.-history.com
