Because MLB forced them to. I seem to remember it was a season where there was a chance that they’d be in the playoffs. And a Chicago alderman actually introduced a bill that would have made installing lights in Wrigley illegal.
Few Cincinnatians mention that Johnny Vander Meer’s second consecutive no-hitter came at the first NIGHT game at Ebbets Field. Vander Meer was a wild rookie, and batters unaccustomed to night baseball were possibly afraid of him.
The Negro Leagues had night baseball before MLB ever did. Allow me to plug one of my favorite attractions: the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, right here in Kansas City!
As a life-long masochist – I am a Cubs and a Red Sox fan ( Hey at least one of my teams won a World Series in my long lifetime ), I resent any changes which would alter the agony of the fans. That said, I think instant replay is a great idea. It would make long boring games even longer and give the fan the opportunity to relive the fallibility of his nemesis, the infallible umpire. Remember the three most famous words in baseball: “We Wuz Robbed” !

@barrycarter @Linguist Of course, the irony in the first night game at Wrigley getting rained out was just splendid.
