“the one to ask is Granny Anteater.”-but if he were to ask the grandmother, she might respond, “I ain’t no snitch,” and the poor fellow’s day would be shot.
For a minister to ask a child “Are you behaving?” may not be the Spanish Inquisition, but it’s hardly “small talk.” Like a doctor asking “How’s your health?” or an accountant asking “How’s business?” or a prosititute asking “Gettin’ any lately?” it’s at best “talking shop,” and very likely a sales pitch…

The answer to the question “Are you behaving?” is always “yes.”
No parameters or comparative values were given or even strongly implied.
Weak or unstated connotations of standards to be met may always be ignored.
Loophole.

I love the church episodes (especially since I don’t go. I’ve tried to explain to my husband “They’re all reruns…”)

At this very moment – yes, I’m behaving. I’m hungry for pancakes now.

I always go to afternoon services. None of that waiting for breakfast.

Always behaving. Good or bad…;-)
I have the butter. The real Cdn maple syrup. The Bisquick to make the pancakes. AND I just had OATMEAL?! for breakfast!?
Well, there’s still dinner.

It’s interesting how everyone in this strip is drawn with cartoonish exaggeration except the Minister!
