Jeff: Dad, got a minute? Rick: Sure, what's up? Jeff: I need to ask you a professional question, writer to writer. Rick: Shoot. Jeff: What do you do when you have nothing to say? Rick: I say it anyway. Jeff: You? No way! Rick: Four times a day. I don't have a pension, Jeff.

Yes, he does have a pension, a very well funded one. He worked for the Washington Post for at least 32 years and was probably earning in the low six-figures when he was let go.-http://m.us.wsj.com/articles/BL-234B-1990-

Itâs amazing how GT uses his own life as background for his characters.

PC = âIf you donât like what someone has to say, donât let them say itâ

Of course writers draw on their own experiences. Why wouldnât they? Some are more obvious about it than others but they all tend to do it. Kurt Vonnegut certainly had a story to tell about his life as a soldier and POW and those of us who read his books are richer for it. Mark Twain wrote about growing up in Hannibal, Mo. Why wouldnât he? He lived there. Sylvia Plath wrote about being a talented young writer and living on the east coast and going through depression and young angst. Even if you are into writing futuristic sci-fi or historical fiction, you still would probably put a little of yourself into your writing in some way and on some level. Sorry I wasnât as funny as you Newshound41, but I get what you are sayingâŠ

Pensions started disappearing in the 1980âs, especially for workers whose companies filed for chapter 11 and pension funds were raided to add to the corporate coffers. Even the publishing companies which contributed to 401 K plans have stopped now.
