Frazz by Jef Mallett for September 23, 2013
Transcript:
Caulfield: Coach Hacker, did you ever get your bell rung when you played in college? Coach Hacker: Oh, yeah. Caulfield: Did you ever get your "bell rung"? Coach Hacker: Oh, none of your business. Caulfield: Apparently a concussion or two does not affect one's ability to picture quotation marks. Frazz: Nice "research."

I get the part about the quote marks, but I donāt get the joke. What does āgetting oneās bell rungā mean, with and without quote marks?

According to my extensive one-minute Internet search, āgetting your bell rungā means getting hit very hard on the head, and maybe getting a concussion. What is it that is none of Caulfieldās business?

Coach probably thought the second reference was to having sex.

Thatās what I took it to mean, quotation marks or not. When I was in phys-ed class in junior high, I took a blow to the ābellā, and as I was on the ground grabbing my crotch, the teacher came over to see if I was ok, and said āthatās what they call having your bell rungā. Iāve never known it to mean a blow to the head.

Punctuation is a VERY important differentiator ā It can mean the difference between:
Weāre going to eat, Uncle Fred andWeāre going to eat Uncle Fred.

As a fighter, having your bell rung was a hard hit to the head that dazed you. Iāve never heard it about getting hit in the ācupā.

We always called getting hit in the cup a ācup checkā.
