I get the part about the quote marks, but I donā€™t get the joke. What does ā€œgetting oneā€™s bell rungā€ mean, with and without quote marks?

According to my extensive one-minute Internet search, ā€œgetting your bell rungā€ means getting hit very hard on the head, and maybe getting a concussion. What is it that is none of Caulfieldā€™s business?

Maybe itā€™s a different type of bell in the second frame.

Coach probably thought the second reference was to having sex.

Thatā€™s what I took it to mean, quotation marks or not. When I was in phys-ed class in junior high, I took a blow to the ā€œbellā€, and as I was on the ground grabbing my crotch, the teacher came over to see if I was ok, and said ā€œthatā€™s what they call having your bell rungā€. Iā€™ve never known it to mean a blow to the head.

Punctuation is a VERY important differentiator ā€“ It can mean the difference between:

Weā€™re going to eat, Uncle Fred andWeā€™re going to eat Uncle Fred.

As a fighter, having your bell rung was a hard hit to the head that dazed you. Iā€™ve never heard it about getting hit in the ā€œcupā€.

We always called getting hit in the cup a ā€œcup checkā€.

Donā€™t you know that guys can turn anything into sexual innuendo simply by putting quotation marks around it ā€¦ if you ā€œknow what I meanā€
