I do not remember where this story goes. I’m pretty sure the Peanuts strip ended with Charlie Brown never getting to hook up with the Little Red-Haired Girl, but I just don’t remember how Schulz developed this story.
The real “little red-haired girl” was Donna Mae Johnson, who worked in Accounting at Art Instruction, his employer before his career as a cartoonist took off. She also had another suitor at the time, and she chose him instead of Sparky. She was always the one that got away in his mind.
Charlie Brown always wanted to meet the little red-haired girl, and now that it’s become reality, he’s nervous. This could lead to a new special:Be Careful What You Wish For, Charlie Brown
I remember this sequence from one of my paperback books. I thought it was sad that CB wrecked his own chance to be with the girl. (But, I never understood why she didn’t go talk with him; after all, her grade depended on the project, too.)

Cheer up, Charlie Brown. Just be yourself. You need more confidence in yourself, and higher self-esteem.
