When I was fifteen, I worked for a butcher. I answered the phone and a kid asked if I had pig’s feet, and I said no. They then asked if I had frog’s legs and I said no again. The giggling in the background made me suspicious and I recalled a tv show that earlier that week had a joke where a person asked another if he had pig’s feet and when the person said yes, the ‘joker’ said, “It must be hard to find shoes.” So I told the person on the phone, “We don’t have pig’s feet, but I can give you the number for someone who does.” The whispering in the background confirmed my suspicions this was a prank call. “Who is it?” they asked. I gave them a number but not a name.I wonder what they did when the person answered the phone, “Police Department.”I have total respect for police who in 99% of instances show incredible courage and responsibility in their efforts to protect us. I apologize to anyone who takes offense at my anecdote. Very RespectfullyC.
My daughter put a recorded message on my phone that simply said, ‘Hi. Please leave a short message and I’ll get back to you."Short and sweet.I hate messages that say, “You know what to do.”
Growing up, I never did that to my dad’s secretary because I knew he would have tanned my hide something awful if I did, followed by a stern talking-to.
I remember all of the books, giving scripts for cute, deceptive answer machine messages. My favorite, and I just fell for it the other day, was to just say hello, like you are there. Wait a minute, let the guy start talking, then say, I’m not here.
Our business has a very easy number to punch it is a series of buttons next to each other. We often get kids calling, but the caller ID showed the same number over and over, the child calling Grandma. We told him to stop, but he didn’t. We finally had to call children’s services and tell them there was a child who was obviously alone at that number. No calls from that one again. Another called over and over the same day and then asked us what number to call for grandma – we said 9-1-1. that number never showed up on caller Id either.
Years ago I went on vacation and several co workers left funny messages on my answering machine. One was getting beat up and screaming. So theses pranks are not limited to children. I had a good laugh. Good thing I did not put this on speaker phone.

My mother – 2 hours of where, how, and why you screwed up.My Dad – 10 seconds of “you know you screwed up, don’t do it again”.
Dad’s way was more effective. I took that to heart with my own kids (and grandkids).

It doesn’t matter what your message says, the call was answered by a machine and not a person. You (they) are free to draw their own conclusions.
