Searching for John Summers doesn’t turn up any relation to golf OR Kansas, that I can find. And it distracts from the main joke because it’s so prominent that it took me a few seconds to even notice the golf club in the window.

It’s so bold and specific that if it’s not part of the joke, it shouldn’t be there. My guess is that it’s some inside joke.

Going to be sporting some morning wood.

Agree with Jaime Bellmyer on all counts. The joke about a golf club that was thrown in the lake coming back for revenge is okay, but the “John Summers” is so prominent, it leads the reader to think that he is missing something.

My best guess is Summers is a friend of Scott Hillburn’s that attended Kansas U. It might be a Big 12 rivalry thing as Hillburn is from Texas.

So, there must be a story about a John Summers from the Univ of Kansas throwing a golf club in a lake. Can anyone explain? Google failed me.

Potter Lake on the KU campus above Memorial Stadium has been a repository of various items, but no golf course within a thrown club…..

I found a John Summers who’s a prof. at Univ. of Kansas. Maybe he and Scott golf together and this is an inside joke?

Huh. A University of Kansas diploma.

It’d be nice to know if the John Sommers was an “Inside Reference” tho Mr. Hilburn :-)
