The overhead in programming today to make it “pretty” for the user is the problem Rita, The core programs look pretty much the same. A One is a One and a Zero is a Zero. A Brick is Brick not a board.

Go back to the Memorex Telex dumb terminals you saw in War Games on the Green Screen data only and the programs ran faster over 4K memory systems to boot. But Data only is not the game anymore. So point is invalid Rita.

I remember learing to write code in both “Octal” snd “Hex”“Lean and Efficient” were the principles we had drummed into our heads. I look at what they’re writing these days and have no question why there are such “security problems” with Systems. They are swollen, gravid monsters of re-written, re-modified, code, kludged together by people from a dozen different committees working at cross-purposes but each of them ALWAYS trying to ensure they’re own Job-Security.

And THAT doesn’t work any way!

    (The Job Security, I mean)

That’s not the reason. The reason is my wife has become more of an administrator / “the boss”.

funny thing is: years ago, the computers were used for word processing and spreadsheets; today are used for the same thing, and even though the programs do the same as years ago, and have thousands more memory and cpu, they still use the whole computer resources to do the same as the computers of decades ago

The New Math was a harebrained response to the space race, and to Russia launching Sputnik. Our wise leaders thought “Jeepers! They’re getting ahead of us! We must respond by raising a generation of Super Geniuses who will put them back in their place.” Of course, as usual, it was assumed that all kids have the exact same potential, and if it’s decided that they’re all going to grow up to be scientists, then by gum, that’s what they’re going to do. What it did was widen the gap between high and low achievers, while even those in the middle struggled.

Sometimes I just lose it all and use one of my Tandy Model 4’s with a MegaMem 1 Meg add-on board, upgraded to 720K DSDD 3.5" drives and using ScripsitPro…..
