This is why I regret never having had a shop course in school nor a mechanically apt dad.For all I know a replacement inducer [or toaster-oven] would cost $700.00….

I think it was actually the muffler bearings.

At least he didn’t need a refill of headlight fluid.

The main problem is a loose nut behind the wheel…..

Hey, I went in for an oil change and paid over $400 by the time they told me everything that needed to be done. They told me that I had two light bulbs burnt out and did I want them replaced? I asked how much the bulbs were. $2 each but they didn’t tell me about the $18 labour to change them. I was furious and never went back. My husband now takes the car in.

My car was shaking on a country road, on the way to work in a small town….

My boss recommended his mechanic, actually a tire dealership….

They found a couple of loose lug nuts on one tire, and tightened them for free….

Then they called me over to look up at my car on the rack, wiggled a front wheel, and said the bearings were dangerously loose and it needed to be taken all apart and repaired….

About $400 for the parts for that one, and “of course” you should do the other or they’ll be “uneven….”

They’d give me a special deal, something like $900 for both wheels…and I should have someone pick me up and leave the car…. might be 5 days cos they were so busy.

(Mind you, this was an old station wagon worth about…oh…. maybe $900.)

I said I’d think about it and drove the car home…. and for years…after my own mechanic confirmed my suspicions…

They were just showing me normal play in the wheels, and my car had sealed bearings, which were fine… and cost about 100 bucks each if I did need one.

My boss refused to believe that his mechanics would EVER lie…. he’s probably STILL throwing money at them for imaginary repairs.

I hope there’s such a thing as a gullibrator…

There used to be a thread in a forum about computer repair frauds. A guy was telling that his dad’s (a rather elderly man) computer screen had gone blank. The computer repair service saw the elderly man (obviously thought of him as a bait) and told hiö that his computer had “run out of megabytes and his graphics card was burn out.” It turned out that the monitıor’s cable had came out of the socket.

I was an aircraft mechanic so I had to charge for “Prop Wash”, and “Aerodynamic Cord”.

Just rewind the crankshaft return spring…

In the Navy we sent guys searching for “Relative Bearing Grease” and “Chow Line”..At a quick-lube, they showed me my worn PCV valve (which is just a check valve). I shook it, it rattled, works fine I told them. Well, I HAVE fallen for some scams, too, even though I’m careful. Most recent was my iron security door (about 10 years ago). My 2004 Focus still had original tires and I always have the inflation checked at Discount Tires (because there is one very nearby). I had a flat a couple of months ago and went there to replace 2 and got a really good price on 4 (under $200). I am also only on 2nd battery (both items suffer from extreme heat in AZ, but I keep car in garage most of the time).
