Gene Weingarten recently discovered that the signature is dead as a means of identification: He could write anything on the electronic tablet at the grocery store and never get caught. Perhaps we really don’t need cursive anymore.
My wife and I proctor SAT exams. There’s always a point at which the kids have to transcribe an agreement in cursive writing and sign the transcription. I always write on the whiteboard, in cursive, “Does anyone not know what cursive writing is?” When we reach that point in the administration, I point out the question. Last year I had one kid transcribe the question instead of the agreement. Needless to say, I had to correct that person.

The last night of cursive writing workshop? Is that what that says? Or maybe it’s first night?

I’ll bet most of you can’t read that.

Curdive? I don’t think this is a type of font. Cursive maybe? All in all the lost art of a meaningfully funny comic strip.

Other than signing your name, there’s no need for cursive.

For most kids these days, cursive refers more to their vocabulary than their writing style.

This came to my attention, thanks to Squidoo:
January 23 is National Handwriting Day
No coincidence, I’m sure, that this ’toon ran today.

Well now I can see it. “Lost art” makes much more sense.
