Peter: Hey, Mom, what's for dinner? Andy: Spaghetti. Peter: What'sthe weather supposed to be like tomorrow? Andy: Cold. Peter: What's the dominant theme of "The Red Badge of Courage," and what literary devices does the author employ to convey it, citing specific passages from the text and limiting your answer to between 500 and 600 words? Can't blame me for trying. Andy: Oh, yes I can.

THAT was trying?! I wouldn’t even call that a “feeble attempt”! She should hand him the book, and tell him he can have his spaghetti and once again experience the weather when and only when he finishes his book report.

I used to wonder why my teachers never had something from the original author to state the answers to these questions. It seemed that the “answers” were only those opinions the teacher held. Whatever happened to “it means what it says?” And the authors they pick are always dead so no one can prove them wrong.

Wonder if that’s real spaghetti…

It’s probably tofu spaghetti — or at least spaghetti with tofu-balls.

Do your own homework, Peter.

Your comments remind me of the part of “Back to School” where Rodney Dangerfield hired Kurt Vonnegut to write a book review of a Kurt Vonnegut novel — and flunked because the author obviously had no idea what Vonnegut was meaning!
