I agree. This strip wasn’t even that large, it should have been a simple matter to increase the scanning resolution, so that the text would have been legible when zoomed in.
If the GoComics platform does not support a higher resolution, then this feature should be moved to a website that does.
I’ve seen a lot of these strips in their original form in old newspapers. They were hard to read even then. The art of inking text in cartoons has come a long way in 60 years.
