Click-to-enlarge image can be found here. Smaller enlargement at Mr. Melcher’s blog entry. The Zouave, sitting (link shows the painting’s Wikipedia description) is privately owned. An auction result for perhaps a different sketch (different medium, dimensions, found here) can be found here.A different coloration, click-to-enlarge image can be found here (along with a description, extensive bio, and collection).269 works, so far, by this artist, are shown online by one location (some of which may be on loan to other museums); if you click a thumbnail image, the displayed page will have the English title as well.A companion work is presented online by its current-location (points to a letter the artist wrote to his brother about them, has other details). At least 3 different websites are devoted to this artist. His Wikipedia page and collection (much more under Content and Subcategories at each level).Fourth, of the 4 works, by this artist, that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here.
The draping of the pantaloons IS somewhat suspect. but not very likely by statistics. His brushstroke techniques have always interested me; in this period he also painted the postman’s family and this older lady.
