Wilberforce: I'm not going to go to school on my birthday next month. Brutus: Whoa, young man, you can't skip school just because it's your birthday! Wilberforce: I didn't have school today, because they're celebratin' presidents' birthdays. Why can't I stay home for my own?

I took my birthday off this year but Iām in college so I can make that decision. I only had one class that day and I knew what we were doing so it wasnāt a big deal.

I like going to school/work on my birthday. One sometimes gets some nice āattentionsā that way.

IIRC, it came about in the ā70s so Congress could have another three-day weekend. They tried to change Veteransā Day to a Monday too but that brought about a bad reaction from the Vets. It disconnected the day from an important date in world history.Iām still annoyed about the disconnect between May 30 and Memorial Day. When I think of the latter the former date always jumps up in my mind. Alas the weekend means more to most than the meaning of the holiday.

āCuz you aināt a dead president, kid. Although I would have to believe that MLK, Jr. would be having a fit over an approximation of his birth date being turned into, among other things, a day off from school. Remove kids from an educational environment over him? Iād think heād think you were daft. Of course, we can argue whether government schools are in fact educational; but thatās not the point here.
