They can’t. The jobs aren’t there. Farms in this country have long since gone to industrialized operations, mechanizing wherever possible, consolidating small farms into giant farms managed by relatively few people. The farm subsidy was intended in part to maintain the family farm, which is rapidly vanishing. It is now just another big business handout.Especially ironic as one of the other reasons for it was to help poor families afford food. Now the GOP have managed to keep funding their beloved big businesses and screw over the people who need help.I guess they think corporate welfare is okay – they don’t need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps or be motivated by starvation. So much for the free market.
Agriculture subsidies have historically been used to lower the cost of producing food which in turn lower food prices in the markets so that people with low incomes can afford to feed their families. The question I have: Does it still work?
i always see the food stamp people in line with a cell phone much better than mine, paying for food with food stamps but tons of cigarettes and beeer with cash or credit card. Usually spending more on that than on food. Cut it.
Yup, Take the food stamp money away that was being used to buy food from the farmers and feeding families at the same time, and give it to the farmers directly and bypass the hungry people. If we starve them to death they can’t vote.
So, bring back the work farm like the early 20th century, they can live in company housing and shop at the company store and drop dead in the field at 88 because they , “owed their soul to the company store” and never able to move out of poverty. Gotta get those poor kids out there too, can’t have them lollygagging going to school using our tax dollars getting an education…to try getting out of poverty… SARC
“Paying the workers and not the takers”Profitable agribusinesses accepting government subsidies are the takers. The pittance they pay migrants to work the fields ensures they also be takers.

That bill makes me sick. Steel from the poor and give to the rich.

Norman Bates must have sold the motel and gone into agri-business. He’s put on a lot of weight.

Am I the only one around here who knows this farm bill replaces subsides with crop insurance?

Hey, it’s not a government giveaway when corporations receive it…

Corporations don’t vote. They do, however, pay people to lobby politicians for them.
