when my 2nd daughter was a baby, my 3 year old used to translate for me when she would babble. Most of the time it was a good thing. It was funny though.

When the mud monster was just starting to talk, I found it easier to learn her language than to try to teach her mine. Worked well as she got the hang of English, but my wife had no idea what we were doing, and it drove her nuts.

I think the non-verbal-yet little ones develop a vocabulary of some sort, and when there are more than one, adapt to the point that it becomes common.

Little ones, if they don’t get frustrated, will drag you (or each other) around the house and point…. Adults don’t necessarily catch on. They, OTOH, have a smaller vocabulary, and seem to welcome new information.

Trying to raise the mud monster was a riot in those days. It would have been nice if she’d had siblings, but it didn’t happen. However, she’s now an RN, and working in a Pediatric Psych ward.
