Well, why not? Only other players (and sometimes, between plays, the ref) can hear whatā€™s being said.

My solution for this asinine ruleā€¦

First pre-season game, every player, on every team, shouts insults at everybody. After the first 3 hour first quarter, the league will listen to the networks and kill the rule.

How about someone explaining to me why ā€œN-Wordā€ is more acceptable than ā€œN_____ā€. (I am quite capable of saying and spelling ā€œthat wordā€, but the censors would not allow the post if I actually did.) That some go into a meltdown upon hearing it ā€“ in any context ā€“ does not speak well of the person taking such undiscriminatory offense. I see such sensitivity as simply a way to exert a degree of power over others. Some people win by winning, others win by losing; this may be an example of the latter.

ā€¦and only white players can use words such as honky, redneck, cracker and peckerwood. Fairā€™s fair.

And only the English can mention ā€œThe French Diseaseā€ whilst only the French can mention ā€œThe English Diseaseā€? (I refer, of course, to the common coldā€¦..which, come to think of it, only commoners should be allowed to mention!)

Reminds me of an old New Yorker cartoon: Sign in 5th Ave. shop window, ā€œIci on ne parle rienā€

Political correctness run amuck. There was a case recently where two African-Americans were involved on opposing sides. One of them had used the n word on the other. The one who it had been used on sued the other one for hate speech and tried to argue that since they were both African-American the word is meaningless. The court disagreed.
