Unfortunately even worse things happen to dogs. There a collie in Kentucky named Lad that was shot in the jaw and his jaw had to be removed. They are in the process of trying to get him to the University of California Davis to make repairs. Do a search for The Arrow Fund to get more information about Lad. I contributed $100 to help him.
