    I taught my son to cook when he was a teenager, and I mean more than a canned pasta or hot dogs in the microwave. All girls should be able to change a flat tire and oil in the car and all boys should be able to cook simple meals and do laundry.

    I agree with Jean to a point—changing the oil in cars has gotten so specialized that my husband doesn’t even do it anymore—he gave up after 40 years of doing it himself. You can actually get it done for not much more than the cost of the oil. But yes, both genders should be able to cook and change a tire. I would say sew on a button and hem as well, but neither my sister or my two sisters-in-law can—they just ask my mother.
