Caulfield: Thomas Hobbes said life is nasty, brutish and short. Though apparently long enough to waste time with redundant adjectives.
Frazz: Or thinking about it.
Caulfield: I want to spend what time i have discrediting grumpy people.
Hobbes said that in man’s /natural state/ life is nasty, brutish and short so people have to form communities to protect themselves from other people (and themselves). Mallett should be well read enough to know that, but maybe he just went for the joke anyhow.

That was “in the state of nature,”. He was advocating for central government.

Hmph. I could’ve sworn that Hobbes said it was Calvin who was nasty, brutish, and short. :)

Late to comment, but I see the thread of contact that this strip often has with “Calvin and Hobbes.” This philosopher is where the Tiger got his name.
