The Berlin Wall.

For some reason, I picture Uncle Duke delivering the “Stop or I’ll shoot!” line. Uncle Duke after seven martinis.

. . . and he played a D.A. on TV.

… and he played a presidential candidate on TV, too.

It’s amazing how the democrats blew this whole thing up from a molehill to a mountain. Any yet, with government spying on it’s own citizens more pervasive than under Hoover and coverups of the killing of our diplomates, they are barely fazed when the chickens come home to roost.

It’s amazing how some still minimize the actions of Nixon during watergate! Fun to see picture of the WH here.

Try to imagine the outcry if the shoe had been on the other foot and the Democrats had broken into the RNC, etc. Whoa!

Was Fred Thompson also the aircraft carrier captain in “The Hunt for Red October?” and in the remake of “Cape Fear,” in a bit part? Yeah, Haldeman and Erlichman were a real pair to draw to. Like having two Cheneys.

A fun song came on at that time “haldemann, ehrlichman , Mitchell and Dean” too bad dean got caught up with that bunch.

Holy Paranoid!

The joke of the strip is that Haldeman and Ehrlichman supposedly prevented other staffers from meeting Nixon, isolating him. Thus, the idea that H would be standing guard when E came up to see Nixon. Because they both had German-sounding names, they were sometimes called the Berlin Wall (per leftwingpatriot’s comment.) I don’t if Chuck Colson was ever called “Checkpoint Charlie.”

How about dealing with contemporary issues again? This is 2014, not 1973. Anybody know why we’re getting these ancient reruns?

My favorite role of his was in a season arc of “Wiseguy”. He played the leader of an antisemitic group. By the end, having been busted and escaping, he was offering Manischevitz to Mr and Mrs Cohen while he tried to sell them a timeshare in Tampa Bay..And I was really surprised to read, years ago, that Haldeman had passed away of Alzheimers in a senior home down the block from where I lived.

It’s good to remember that Karl Rove was a Nixon protégé.

Being 13 at the time, I now sadly suspect that I saw the beginning of the slippery downhill slope in American political idealism; I just didn’t realize it then.

George McGovern would have been a far better choice for prez than Richard Nixon. My family had a don’t blame I voted for McGovern bumper sticker on our car for a long time.

Sadly, I remember Haldeman and Ehrlichman as well as Dean, Kissinger, and McNamara. The nightly news was awash in allegations, insinuations and declarations. What a mess. Happily, once Carter came along we could concentrate on lampooning him and his family.

Bringing back the memories. In HS civics class, the teacher would bring in a TV and we’d watch the hearings.

Carter deserves more credit than he gets. That whole not getting us into war thing is a big deal. For those worried about marital fidelity, you don’t get any better than jimmy carter. He has continued his work to help poor folks get homes long after leaving office. He is getting up there in years and continues to keep plugging away, long after he could have just put his feet up.

One of my favorite Watergate Era memories was sitting alone in a motel room in Clinton Iowa after having been at work for 14 hours and watching the Saturday Night Massacre unfold. I was a thousand miles from home, it was late at night and I wanted to cheer my lungs out that Nixon was toast!

@DavidHuieGreenThe Soviet Union did not go into Afghanistan because the US was weak; it went into Afghanistan because the Islamic rebels were on the verge of overthrowing the communist Soviet backed regime. The fear was, that the Islamic threat would spread to the Soviet regions in Central Asia. The election of Ronald Reagan did not stop the Soviets from pressuring Polish government to crackdown on Solidarity.

Who could ever forget the camp David accord meeting where we saw carter, begin, and Sadat raise hands together having brokered a deal for peace in the Middle East. Even though it didn’t last forever, it was a moment when a Christian, Jew and Muslim managed to join hands in peace. It was a great era of diplomacy in some ways. No, he didn’t always succeed, but he did have his triumphs.
