Janis: What is the holdup now?
Arlo: They're reviewing the play!
Janis: They don't do that in baseball, do they?!
Arlo: Yep! They're getting into it big time this year!
Janis: Just what baseball needs.
They should give the managers a flag to throw instead of making them walk out onto the field and talk to the ump. The flag could have been, oh jeez, I don’t know, beige, maybe?.
Speaking as a hard core, baseball fan, I like it. Did you see the fourth out in the bottom of the second in the Mets-Braves last night? Motivated by the potential for review – heads up play, adds excitement.
This was long needed in baseball as shown by the large number of plays that are being changed, especially at first base. MLB should show how many are over turned, and who is over turned the most. We need umpire stats too!
“What we need is honesty and better attitudes…. and discipline…”.The best way to keep people honest is to watch them like a hawk. Those with bad attitudes and discipline will soon bite the dust.
" “instant-replay”, an oxymoron if ever there was one..".Instantly play back what was actually done, nothing oxymoronic about thatBesides, it’s a ball game, who’s in a hurry?
MLB is a victim of our short attention spans. “Instant replays” are an ersatz for our need for definitive conflict resolution. I say if you want to make baseball relevant again, you redefine innings for the “temporally and monetarily poor”; ie. make games shorter and cheaper to attend. It’s really hard to keep up with baseball when you have to work 60 hours per week.

It seems to be working well so far…It’s not as if baseball was a speedy game anyway…..

Why not just let a robot be the umpire – oh, and maybe robot players, too. That way there would be no human mistakes at all.
