Transcript:
Miss Phelps: "Mr. Fogarty! Is that a spring in your step?" Mr. Fogarty: "Indeed it is, Miss Phelps" Miss Phelps: "Your last class must have been joyfully gratifying!" Mr. Fogarty: "Not at all. It was wretchedly discouraging. As usual." Miss Phelps: "So why the happy -" Mr. Fogarty: "I've decided to retire"

Aaah, when teachers chuckle, it’s usually to “teach” someone a lesson! Either that, or Fogarty noticed… “an olfactory change”….. in the air quality around him….

Retirement should make anyone happy, actually! Now, we have to wait to see what Ms. Phelps thinks about that! Nothing like a mini-cliffhanger… ;)

Its kind of sad that after all these years, they still call each other by their surnames… ;)

The kids have a terrible time dealing with their senior prom. Now a teacher has his last day of the school year and has a terrible time with it….starting to see a pattern here.

Maybe Pitts will Hire Mr. Kotter to replace Fogerty. Knute would feel right at home with Kotter’s kids.

They’ve worked together for…how long? And still call each other “Mr.Fogarty” and “Miss Phelps”?

Is Mr. Fogarty representative of Mr. Evans? Will he retire soon? What makes us think he’s gonna follow his characters splintered up through college?

Lets just hope he doesn’t just start the strip over from the beginning!

Ok, I give up on ever hearing the rest of the prom stories (unless, like one reader noted, there are flashbacks later). So I’m going to go Levi and make some of it up.*Crystal wore long, flowing black pants of a soft fabric that made it look like a dress. They were “hip-huggers”, with which she wore a black midriff shirt. Miss Phelps was going to advise her to cover up, but then figured, “What the heck”.*Of special note was a new accessory. Over her navel was a new tat— a Goth letter “K”! Wrapped around the K was a green serpent with a red tongue. When Knute, dressed in a white suit with a black t-shirt, saw her new tat, he passed out. As he came to, he paused while getting up and, staying on his one knee, asked if he could clean her toilet for the rest of her life.*I don’t know Crystal’s response.*Next, I’ll tell you about two more that were excluded.

If was the final dance, and Ox came to Tiff to collect it. Tiff, who hadn’t danced all night, began to brush him aside but then noticed he had the most expensive designer suit in the entire place. They are now going steady.*Elvez & Mort didn’t have dates for the prom, and like me they spent most of it in the basement playing games. However they came up at the last dance (which wasn’t a really slow dance) to see what was going on, looked at each other, shrugged, and began moving their feet. * Bern & Delta thought it was a bit funny so they came over and started moving their feet too. Other kids who had gone stag or doe joined them, and soon every one was on their feet and moving. Miss Phelps & Mr. Fogarty joined in.

It was an amazing prom.

Mordy— look in the second frame and see how unforgivably WEAK that coffee is! Yet, in the last frame, Mr. Fogarty is chuckling. Why, with coffee that bad? Or is it coffee?

Ms Phelps may decide to Retire also. Lots of Teachers burn out after 5 Years…
My only concern there would be that if she (Phelps) also retires, Bernice might not be ready to take over her position (assuming that’s in Bern’s destiny plan). Perhaps, Ms. Phelps can hang in there until Bern is ready. It might also be a way for Fogarty to make guest appearances (assuming he’s not going to go part time at Pitts CC or Moony Uni), if he and Phelps “hook up.”

are we approaching the end of Luann the comic, or preparing for the next of life’s stages?

Guess we’ll find out. They’ve graduated. Well, maybe we have to go through the ceremony, I guess.
Sisyphos over 10 years ago
It is surprising that Mr. Fogarty did not give his friend, Miss Phelps, a heads-up on his retirement plans, unless they are truly last-minute (which seems unlikely). Their quasi-romance seems less flourishing than ever, even less than those of some of the students….And as for it being the last day of school, that actually seems about right. Many schools have concluded or are concluding their spring semesters right now in RL….

Mr. Fogarty and Knute sure do resemble each other. Have we ever seen Knute’s parents?

And Mr. Fogarty’s last laugh: “Everybody in my class gets an F and doesn’t graduate until you repeat the class in summer school!”
I just hope Evans doesn’t pull a Batiuk and have time jump from high school graduation to just after college graduation…or a 90210 and come up with excuses to have everybody end up in the same local university after all.
brulemonster over 10 years ago
I’m assuming Fogarty will end up teaching at Luann’s college. I’m curious about how the upwardly mobile members of this strip will be included in the storyline. Of course, it will take a good deal of comic strip time to actually make it through the summer.

Good Catch! I thought he said “R.I.” for “Rhode Island.” :-)

Might as well retire now, Mr. Fogarty. The students coming up aren’t going to be getting any better than the ones you’re dealing with now. Take the pension and run.
smccurley over 10 years ago
you guys realize, Greg is wrapping up story lines. Sounds like someelse is retiring. Luann the comic strip is getting ready to say goodbye. Don’t know when but probably in the not to distant future.
TORAD_07 over 10 years ago
Or he could have meant FL for Florida.
Actually, Florida would make more sense, as schools in that part of the country often do end their years in mid-May, and resume in mid-August, due to the oppressive heat in June.
TORAD_07 over 10 years ago
Actually, I think del_grande has his (?) tongue firmly in his (?) cheek.
Ya know… I missed that (ie. tounge-in-cheek), because I wouldn’t have put it past Fogarty to do, for real… :-)

“Not according to JayBlue.”^She will be glad for him, but "Sir Dave’ is referring to things other than just teaching…….
JayBluE over 10 years ago
"Or,“School’s out — forever!”“Class dismissed!” ^Using a “Triple Crown” reference here, you might want to turn your horse back around. It’s probably just a development for Fogarty here, and not necessarily for the end of classes, yet. I’m reasonably sure that there will be a strip where we see the graduation ceremony (and perhaps a couple more scenes around the school) and maybe a loose end or two…. who knows? Maybe next week will be them receiving their caps and gowns and final grades (from tests) and acceptance letters, etc….

Real Life….
JayBluE over 10 years ago
Answer#1: If that’s the case, then almost none of the strips would have comments. Some strips like “Ten Cats”, “Citizen Dog” and a few others are actually amongst the most peacable boards, and they have convos about the well-being and whereabouts of others, And amongst those comments, discussion about the strip is still carried on amongst those same commenters. For a “quick breath of fresh air”, I enjoy going there for a smile or three…. – Answer #2: Some of the things that “seem” to have nothing to do with the strip actually do when you think about it. If the “six degrees of separation” principle were applied, one aspect can spawn other things connected in succession, much like a “real life”, “natural” conversation would eventually work out….. For instance, when Frank was taking pictures, there could be a discussion about types of cameras, or it could have possibly led to subjects like posting those pics online, or the “pros and cons of instagram”, which in turn could have led to a discussion of social media sites, etc…

If seems have Mr Fogarty is getting more time that the prom which could have had some really interesting stories. I sincerely hope the series does not end with Luann’s graduation. It will be harder to do the comic with college characters due to our liberal society and so many subjects that would be hard to address in a comic format for all the younger fans. Let us hope we can still see Brad and Toni’s wedding, Bernice finding a serious boyfriend, Tiffany leaving for Hollywood, whether Luann and Quill stay together, and if Quill goes to NY Theatre or Hollywood. Delta becoming a congresswoman, or something like that. Luann probably deciding on a teaching career with young children (despite Mr Fogarty) Crystal and Knute turning into a normal (happily married) couple. It would be sad to end the strip. But like I say, if this is the worst thing that happens, consider yourself lucky.
