Oh, I know that feeling when it comes to my father, my brother and myself when we go camping. It was even harder when it was me (much younger then) on my mother’s lap when the four of us hauled her harp to a concert.

Is there any state that since 2000 will not give you a seat-belt ticket for 3 in front?

A lot of the trucks(and cars) with bench seats had 3 sets of seat belts. That made it legal for 3 to sit in front. In the early company cars I drove, my employer would opt for bench seats and vinyl upholstery: cold in the winter, hot in the summer and slippery, but easy to keep clean.

I’ve had a share of chuckles and nods with “yep” over the years, but this is the first time I ever paused and wondered why this was unusual. Must be a plugger.

First time I had a pickup, I and my wife with 2 daughters and a 70 pound dog in the front (only) seat. It was a little crowded.

And how about the old crew cab trucks that sat a minimum six, but now only four because of bucket seats all around.

You qualify if your car has a bench seat as well. Seatbelts were optional on my 65 Falcon and missing altogether in my 64 Galaxy.

Help me understand this. What is so odd/funny/unusual about 3 people in a pickup truck seat?

Interesting comments. Obviously, most of you aren’t pluggers. If you were, you would know there is ONLY one seat in a plugger pickup – a bench seat that will hold three or four.

The other seat is in the pickup bed – a board on some cans.

‘Crew cabs’ were only for the rich guys
 not pluggers.

Pluggers drive old full size pickups – that actually have a large bench seat.

My brothers and I are a little large. We squeezed into the front seat of a Datsun pick-up once. My dad still laughs at the memory of that site.

Yep! I shore miss my old truck with a bench seat! Good for holding beer coolers too, besides people.
