Pickle jars can be tough to open – that doesn’t even have to be an age thing. My mom had one of those rubber grips that we always had to use to open them. It was always a brand new jar that hadn’t been opened yet that gave the most trouble.

To open a pickle jar, take a beer opener and use it as if it is a can. When the middle of the top pops up, you can just twist and open. And I’m an old lady of 71 and I can open one every time!!

I use my mother’s trick to open jars. Just take the heaviest knife you have and bang around the lid. Works for me.

When I couldn’t open a jar, I would stretch a thick rubber band (the kind grocery stores use to bunch asparagus) around the edge of the lid.

That always gave me the grip I’d need.

Keep a large pair of Channelocks in the kitchen drawer now. Don’t need them for work any more. Still handy for jars, though.

I just turn jars like that upside down and give the lid a good thump on the counter. Works for me.

Pop the seal with an ice pick. Small hole in lid breaks the seal. Works every time.

run hot tap water over lid – usually expands lid enough to loosen it

or get something that gives leverage – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eddingtons-EasiTwist-Jar-Bottle-Opener/dp/B000H7AFZ6/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1403112329&sr=1-1&keywords=lid+opener

Rayovac batteries come in reusable plastic containers simply held closed by the paper label.

I just wish they still made the bags inside the cereal boxes that you could open with your hands without scissors.

I’ve had really good luck opening jars with the oven mitts that have the non slip/silicon grip stuff on them. And as a canner, I know the best way to open a jar of pickels is when they’re still warm from the cabinet, then the vacum is broken before they cool off in the fridge.

I keep a rubber strap wrench in the kitchen for jars, a very small pair of pliers for those darned seal tops under milk and mayo and heavy duty shears for plastic packaging. My grip isn’t what it used to be and those thing help tremendously.
