They just weren’t prepared for change. Some were writing to John, urgently informing him that I couldn’t draw, and someone needed to teach me how. The wonder of the internet: it allows people to go by their first impulse, even if it’s slightly hysterical, and not have to think it over before hitting send.
I think people in general are adverse to change, but fans (short for “fanatical” … hmmmm) even more so. Frankly, if things don’t change every now and again, I think the creative process dies a little and staleness follows. Anyway, I love this strip and I’m glad to see it’s not going into repeat purgatory as so many have lately. :-)
You mean her change of hairstyle? That started when John wrote a gag where Rita hired Steve Wozniak to give her a makeover. I thought it’d be fun to go beyond the one gag, and really give her a new look. My original plan was to have her hair grow out and return to the way it had been before. I abandoned that scheme, and left her with the bob.
But, oh, the insults that were hurled my way. The irony is- Kyle Miller chose to leave. It was his idea. But some readers were carrying on as though John had fired him, and I presumed to push him aside. Oy.

I think the computer is dreaming pipe dreams. …This is new for me, since I didn’t start reading Working Daze until 2011 or so.

Yeah, a real lot of readers freaked out at first.

My computer probably wishes I were Stephen Hawking, too!

At this point of the strip’s history, I felt like I should show every wire and cable. I later abandoned that idea.

Larger head to body ratio back then. Also, I’m jealous, in 2008 my employer had me on a 25 lbs. CRT monitor with bad focus.

Yeah, but oftentimes not without a lot of whining and stuff :-D

It was really amazing the hostility over a comic strip. We lost some readers that never came back. :(
