I built a crystal radio back in the 1950’s along the Ohio River and marveled at picking up KDKA in Pittsburgh, the original commercial radio station about 165 miles away.
I remember having one. I had to go up onto our house roof and string the crystal between the two chimneys up there, while my dad manned the extension cord wrapped around my waist, to make sure I didn’t fall (Dad didn’t like heights any better than I did!) Good times back then, the whole world was awaiting us kids. I remember not having very good reception on the ear-phones — you have to remember this was back 50+ years, and there really weren’t that many radio stations broadcasting at the time
I had a succession of “Rocket Radios” that used a commercial germanium diode so you didn’t have to play with a cat’s whisker. I did try to make a detector out of a piece of carborundum paper but got nothing.
