True story (at least as passed to my Uncle Ernie’s sister Florence by the son of one of the characters): Before two brothers, Albert and Gustav, left Minnesota to homestead in Montana their mother taught them how to take care of themselves, including washing the white shirts “no decent young man should be without.” Usually the job fell to Albert, but one day after a heavy rainstorm Gustav volunteered to do the laundry. He put it in a burlap bag, tied it on the end of a lariat, and dragged it behind his horse through a nearby swamp. Albert did all the laundry after that.
