verne: Did you guys know that L. frank baum, author of the "wizard of oz", was a shopkeeper in the town of aberdeen and... he played baseball in the south dakota league, and he... what...? hey....? RJ: kids don't try this at home. hammy: too much hello...?
And he was born in Chittenango, NY which holds an OZfest every year. Story has it that he got the name Oz from his two drawer file cabinet: top one was A-N and the bottom one O-Z.
Mostly spot on, except Baum didn’t play baseball. He formed and managed the team. Thank goodness Verne didn’t get to Baum’s newspaper career and his controversial editorials calling for the extermination of the local Sioux!
I cannot defend that Sioux editorial completely, but it should be noted that, at one point, what it seems to boil down to is, “Since we Whites have done everything possible to destroy them, their society, and their dignity, maybe we should at least have the decency to give them warriors’ deaths.”
