I believe in marriage, as it creates (well, it attempts to create) permanence and stability which is good for people and good for society, but I actually agree with Clare in a back-to-front way: the fact that it has worked doesn’t show that marriage is good for them, it shows that they don’t need it. To put it another way, the people who should be getting married are the ones who hope to stay together but aren’t sure they’re capable of it, not the ones who are sure they are staying together.
