When you actually break down those disney fairytales like this, you find a lot of the stories end up pretty weird.
I always thought the Little Mermaid was all a little too upbeat for a movie where the main character is a stalker.
When The Little Mermaid came out, my aunt kept saying what a sweet movie it was. But she couldn’t remember how the original story ended. She was shocked when we explained to her that the mermaid dies.
@iamtxmilady: Do you think Disney adaptations would hold their appeal after all these years if they kept the original endings?
And did away with all the diminuitive sidekicks with attitude?
And didn’t revise the plots to accomodate the hero(ine)s learning valuable lessons about self-worth?
And used used stock music appropriate to the time and place of the stories instead of commissioning Sting, Phil Collins, or Elton John to record a sure-shot Top-Ten hit for the title theme?
And cast new vocal talents to play the villains, instead of tapping Hollywood “heavies” to basically parody their own images?
Me, either, but I do enjoy reading the original Grimm’s Folktales.
Hmmm, so I think Scott just called his wife the prettiest geek ever. He kind of has a point about Stockholm Syndrome though, even though I also thought this movie was cute.
Wildcard, in re: your comment “Do you think Disney adaptations would hold their appeal after all these years if they kept the original endings? “: Sure they would- the original stories have held up a lot longer than the Disney versions so far.

The repartee is always the best part of this comic. I’d bet that Scott is not nearly this quick in real life. (His wife probably is, though.)

Basically anyone’s wife could identify with the “in love with a hairy monster” part…
Wasn’t this particular bit published already?
