BC started out many years ago with a nice concept, and played out many variations within that concept. In time, fresh ideas may have become harder to find, so it was decided to throw the concept to the wind. Whatever gag is deemed funny is in, whether or not it fits the setting. Too often it doesn’t. Lawn Mower? The ants live in an anthill, surrounded by sand. Hah ha, it’s funny to suggest that ‘a guy’ might not ever look at his lawn mower. But here it makes zero sense, so the impact is lost. Especially when the artist chooses to pull back for the punch line, and underscore that there is no lawn to mow. The joke is no longer on Jake for being lazy, but, instead, for owning a lawn mower.
The Ants have always been used whenever modern technology is the theme. Or as Wilson Bob Tucker used to say, “Never let the facts stand in the way of a good story.”
Jake is their son. Dad hid the gift where he won’t find it, because he avoids mowing the lawn. It IS funny. And even funnier since they are ants, and there isn’t any lawn. It’s a CARTOON guys!
