Given how expensive Martian asparagus would be, I can see it being the next hot menu item for the one-percenters.

The British Army has done similar things for many years. At one time, side whiskers (what I believe were called "muttonchops) were regulation for the enlisted men.

I just realized something…the year the British Army stopped making mustaches compulsory for officers was1916, when they were losing thousands ( sometimes tens of thousands ) of soldiers in the first MINUTES of any given battle.Coincidence? I don’t think so
