I can not see the word “dulce” (“dulces” is the actual problem word) without a spine-chilling flashback, particularly when I think of all the stories in the news these days.

Near where I grew up there were two tiny grocery stores across a busy street from each other. One was run by an anglo and stock the kinds of stuff any “ordinary” store would carry—meat counter in the back, fresh fruits and vegetables in the front, canned goods behind the counter, bins of beans and such in the middle.

The other would fit that same description, but somehow it was the “Mexican” store.

One of the things THEY stocked was “Dulces”—round sweet rolls with a variety of toppings.

And my horror story—one day as I skated to the corner (headed to school, I guess) I spotted a delivery man next to the “Mexican” store, unloading a large sheet pan of those delightful lovelies and I rolled across the street and came to a stop behind him, poking a finger in his back and saying “This is a stickup!”

    He gave me one!
